Desert Knowledge Australia Solar Centre
Alice Springs is home to the $3 million Desert Knowledge Australia Solar Centre. Located at the Desert Knowledge Precinct on the southern outskirts of town, this is the first site in Australia to publicly showcase such a broad range of large scale solar installations.
The aim of the Solar Centre is to demonstrate a wide range of solar energy technologies and applications. Technologies include cutting edge solar panels on fixed and tracking arrays as well as a solar powered bore pump and water purification unit. The performance of all technologies on display at the Solar Centre will be independently monitored, and the output data is publicly available.
The Solar Centre has 15 solar installations on display and a self guided interactive helps visitors to understand the benefits of the technologies on display.
The centre is open during business hours Monday to Friday and entry is free. To visit the centre, drive south on the Stuart Highway about 5kms south of the MacDonnell Ranges and look for signs to the Desert Knowledge Precinct.
