What is the 10:10/20:20 Energy Saving Incentive?
If you have had a Home Energy Survey and you’ve begun to implement the recommendations in your report such as turning off the Solar Hot Water booster, changing your light globes or installing shading, you should begin to see your electricity consumption drop. If you can reduce your electricity consumption by 10% or more compared to the consumption for the same billing period of the previous year, Alice Solar City will credit your next bill by 10%. Reduce your average daily use by 20% or more and receive a 20% credit.
You can start to claim the 10:10/20:20 rebate from the first complete billing period after you have registered with Alice Solar City. You must also have lived in the same house and have electricity bills under your name for the corresponding quarter of the previous year to be able to make the claim. The 10:10/20:20 rebate is calculated on the daily average electricity consumption measured in kilowatt hours (kWh) and the amount you are paid is based on the value of electricity saved. If you make a successful 10:10/20:20 claim, it will appear as a credit on the following power bill (refer to the back page of your bill, under Payments Received).
How to calculate if you can claim 10:10/20:20
You will need your current power bill as well as the bill for the same period the previous year. If you don’t have your bill from the previous year, contact Alice Solar City as your previous consumption records have been supplied to us by Power and Water.
You will also need to read the service charges on the back of both your bills. Refer to the fact sheet “How to Read your Electricity Bill “ for assistance in locating the information needed.
To work out your 10:10/20:20 rebate you can use our online calculator or you can click here to print out these instructions and use the table below.
If you have any difficulty with these instructions or the on-line calculator, feel free to contact the Smart Living Centre. We will be happy to do the calculations for you.

Using your bill from same period of the previous year.
- In column A put in the total consumption in kWh (if you are on a Cost Reflective Tariff, include the sum of the peak and off-peak consumption).
- In Column B put in the days in the period
- Divide the figure in Column A by the figure in Column B and put the result in Column C. This is you per day average consumption in kWh for the previous year.
Using your current bill
- In Column D put in the total consumption in kWh
- In Column E put in the days in period
- Divide the figure in Column D by figure in Column E and put the result in Column F. This is your per day average consumption in kWh for the current bill.
- Put the tariff rate as shown on your current power bill in Column G. If you are Cost Reflective Tariffs use the standard flat tariff rate (for 2008/2009 use 0.1552, for 2009/2010 use 0.1831, for 2010/2011 use 0.1923)
To work out if you have made a reduction from your previous period daily average consumption and how much that reduction is.
- Take the value of Column F from the value of Column C then divide the result by the value of Column C and multiply this by 100 to turn it to a percentage. i.e. ((Column C -Column F)/Column C) x100. Put this result in Column H. This gives your reduction in your consumption as a percentage and is used to work out your rebate.
To work out the amount of any rebate
- If the result in Column H (i.e. the reduction in consumption) is less than 10 percent – you will not receive a rebate. If the result in Column H is a negative – your energy consumption has increased.
- If the result in Column H is 10 percent or more but less than 20 percent you will receive a rebate of 10 percent.
o To work out the amount of this rebate multiply the per day average consumption kWh from the previous billing period (Column C) x the current tariff (Column G) then multiply this by the number of days in the current billing period (Column E) and multiply this result by .1 i.e. (Column C x Column G x Column E x .1)
- If the result in Column H is 20 percent or more you will receive a rebate of 20 percent
o To work out the amount of this rebate multiply the per day average consumption kWh from the previous billing period (Column C) x the current tariff (Column G), and then multiply this result by the number of days in the current period (Column E) then multiply this result x .2 i.e. (Column C x Column G x Column E x .2)
How to Claim the 10:10/20:20 saving incentive
To claim your 10:10/20:20 credit, bring your current bill in to the Alice Solar City Smart Living Centre (as well as your bill for the same time last year), and we will calculate the exact saving. If you can’t make it in, scan and email your bill to (info@alicesolarcity.com.au), fax it to 08 8950 4359 or post it to PO Box 8561, with a note letting us know you wish to claim 10:10/20:20. Ensure that you provide a copy of both the front and back page of the bill.
- If you have reduced your energy consumption by at least 10%, we will arrange for a credit to be paid against your next Power and Water electricity bill. This will appear on your bill as an amount already paid, identified as a 10:10/20:20 Payment in the Payments Received Section, on the back of your bill
- You can continue to claim 10:10/20:20 each quarter for as long as you can continue to reduce your daily average consumption on your energy bill by at least 10 percent as compared to the same period in the previous year.
After we have assessed your bill for eligibility for a 10:10/20:20 claim, we will advise you of the amount you are eligible for.
Claiming the No Worse off Safety Net
If you are participating in the trial Cost Reflective Trial you may also be eligible to claim the No Worse Safety Net. Refer to our Fact Sheet “Claiming the No Worse off Safety Net” for more information.
