Work starts on Sustainable Living House

This week a new Solahart 302J OTP hot water system was installled at the Sustainable Living House. Although the existing solar hot water system was less than 10 years old it was evidently leaking - note the white streaks where leaking water has evaporated in the photo?

Upon removal of the old unit it was discovered that the inner tank had been breached and the layer of insulation between the inner and outer tank was saturated. Water between the tanks was then forcing itself out through small holes in the outer tank so although the system was still functioning it was not in good condition and several roof sheets had to be replaced once the old system had been removed. This highlights the importance of checking your solar hot water system and making sure a qualified professional is called in at the first sign of trouble.

Replacement of the existing solar hot water system was the first step in a range of energy and water efficiency measures that will be implemented prior to the first open day on Sunday 13 September 2009 which is national Sustainable House Day. The next step will be roof painting and installation of a BP Solar Energizer 2000 photovoltaic (PV) solar power system during the 100 days of Solar.
