With cooler weather setting in, it's time to start thinking about reducing your heating costs.
Ducted evaporative airconditioning can be a significant source of heat loss when heating your home. To reduce this loss, close and cover the vent grills in each room where possible and place a cover over your airconditioner to prevent the flow of air through it. Wrapping a UV resistant tarp around the unit will do the job, or purchase a fitted cover.
Also turn the water supply to the airconditioner off as part of your winter shutdown.
Some houses also have a return air vent in the ceiling which reduces the need to have doors and windows open while the evaporative system is running. These typically have a lever to allow you to close the vent for winter.
Now is also a good time to start planning for having your airconditioner serviced ready for the return of the hot weather in October.
