Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs) and Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) can also be used to replace conventional downlights. Typical halogen downlights aren't that efficient (50 to 60 watts depending on whether they use 12 volt or 240 volt power) so by getting them replaced not only will you be using less power you'll also be generating less heat inside your house.
