Hot Box
With little external shading and a metal roof, this second story unit was a real "Hot Box"
Before the shading was installed the sun shining directly onto the patio made both it and the home very hot
Before the external shade was put in the bedroom received a lot of heat from the western sun
External shading cut down the heat gain in the home
The external shade can be lowered in summer to cut down heat gain and raised in winter to allow more heat penetration
The external shading not only made the patio a more liveable area but reduced the heat gain into the home
The rooms on the eastern side received a lot of sun and heat gain
No external shading made this room very hot in summer
Air cell blinds were installed in rooms where it was not practicable to install external shading
ASC is monitoring how effective air cell blinds are in reducing heat gain in the home
Painting the roof white also helped to reduce the internal temperatures
This one story home in Northside was another "Hot Box"
